Southern Westfjords

In the summer of 2012 Matís opened a branch in Patreksfjörður to serve the southern Westfjords (Icelandic: sunnaverðir Vestfirðir) and the area of Breiðafjörður, in collaboration with Matís' operations in Snæfellsnes.

The southern Westfjords has been known throughout generations as a major fishery and fish processing area as well as for great developments in fish farming, especially in recent years. Local aquaculture mostly involves the farming of salmon, char and rainbow trout but also blue mussels. Among other products from the area are calcareous algae products, shrimp fishing in Arnarfjörður and traditional agricultural businesses. In recent years, efforts have been made to obtain sustainable production certification for the area covering fishing, aquaculture and processing. Additionally, organic certification has been sought for the harvesting and utilization of mountain plants from the area. Such certification improves product marketing, promotes environmental awareness and raises the profile of this area.

Matís' operations in the southern Westfjords consist mainly of promoting innovation and maximising value, particularly through the complete utilisation of raw materials. This is achieved by diverse means, working in close cooperation with companies and individuals involved in food production.

Yet another purpose for Matís' operations in the area is to create a high class facility for research into marine aquaculture in Patreksfjörður. Patreksfjörður is intended to serve the development of fish farming through research for the benefit of the industry and the country as a whole.

Matís' branch manager in Southern Westfjords is Lilja Magnúsdóttir.
