Aquaculture char – maximizing health of gut

Ongoing research at Matís is looking into the diets and selection of diets that support a diverse and balanced gut microbiota during first stages of life of aquaculture char, with potential benefits for health, resilience and growth.

The first sample collection of fish was conducted in April. The fish were fed for several weeks on different experimental diets and subjected to growth measurements as well as behavioural studies. Fish guts/intestines of over 100 animals were removed and prepared for high-throughput sequencing of the microbiota. The next step is to analyse correlations between diet and gut microbiota. In connection to the growth data, this will lead to an in-depth evaluation of the tested diets and selection of diets that supports a diverse and balanced gut microbiota, with potential benefits for health, resilience and growth.

The second feeding trial is currently underway and includes diets prepared with insect meals, single cell proteins, as well as several commercial diets as controls.
